Evidence supporting the use of: Antler horn
For the health condition: Backache
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Antler horn, often referred to as "deer antler" or "deer velvet," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is classified as a tonic, believed to nourish the kidney and liver, strengthen bones and muscles, and support the body’s yang energy. In TCM, backache is frequently associated with kidney deficiency, and antler horn is prescribed to address this underlying cause. However, the rationale is rooted in traditional concepts rather than modern biomedical understanding.
From a scientific perspective, there is very limited evidence to support the use of antler horn for backache specifically. Some studies have examined its general effects on physical strength, immune function, or joint health, but robust clinical trials targeting back pain are lacking. The few modern studies that exist are either animal-based or have methodological limitations, such as small sample sizes or lack of controls. Therefore, while antler horn continues to be used in traditional contexts for backache, its efficacy remains unproven by contemporary scientific standards.
