Prebiotic blends—composed of non-digestible fibers such as inulin, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), and galactooligosaccharides (GOS)—are being investigated for their potential benefits in autoimmune disorders. The rationale is grounded in the understanding that gut microbiota play a vital role in immune system regulation. Research has demonstrated that patients with autoimmune diseases (such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and type 1 diabetes) often exhibit gut dysbiosis, characterized by reduced microbial diversity and altered composition. Prebiotics can selectively stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, which may help restore a healthier microbiome balance. Animal studies and preliminary human trials provide some evidence that prebiotics can help modulate immune responses, reduce systemic inflammation, and improve clinical markers associated with autoimmune conditions. For example, mouse models of multiple sclerosis (experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis) have shown improvement with prebiotic administration, attributed to increased short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production and regulatory T-cell induction. However, large-scale, high-quality clinical trials in humans are limited, and results are inconsistent, with most evidence considered preliminary. Overall, while there is a plausible scientific mechanism and some early data, the evidence supporting the use of prebiotic blends for autoimmune disorders remains limited. More rigorous clinical studies are required to confirm efficacy, optimal dosing, and specific patient populations who may benefit most.
