Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oldenlandia diffusa (also known as Hedyotis diffusa or Bai Hua She She Cao) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is valued for its purported anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. In TCM theory, it is employed to "clear heat" and "remove toxins" and is sometimes included in herbal blends prescribed for inflammatory or immune-related conditions. However, these traditional uses are not disease-specific in the Western medical sense, and there is no direct historical record of its use explicitly targeting autoimmune disorders as defined by modern medicine (e.g., lupus, rheumatoid arthritis). Instead, its use in TCM may overlap with symptoms seen in autoimmune diseases.

From a scientific perspective, a small number of in vitro and animal studies suggest that Oldenlandia diffusa extracts can modulate immune responses, reduce inflammatory cytokines, or inhibit lymphocyte proliferation. However, these studies are preliminary and not specifically focused on human autoimmune diseases. There is a lack of well-designed clinical trials in humans evaluating its efficacy or safety for autoimmune disorders. The evidence base is thus limited, mostly traditional, and only weakly supported by early experimental data. Consequently, while traditional use persists, scientific validation for its effectiveness in treating or supporting autoimmune disorders is minimal at this time.
