Evidence supporting the use of: Galactooligosaccharides
For the health condition: Autoimmune Disorders
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) are prebiotic fibers that promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. There is emerging scientific interest in the gut-immune axis, with the gut microbiome playing a significant role in modulating immune responses. Several animal studies and a limited number of human trials have explored the potential for GOS to modulate immune function, including impacts on inflammatory markers and T-cell responses. In autoimmune disorders, where immune regulation is disrupted, some data suggest that restoring a healthy gut microbiota with prebiotics like GOS could be beneficial. However, direct evidence supporting the use of GOS specifically for the treatment or management of autoimmune diseases in humans is currently limited and mostly preliminary. Most research to date focuses on indirect markers of immune health or on related conditions such as allergies and atopic dermatitis. There is insufficient high-quality clinical trial data to recommend GOS as a definitive therapy for autoimmune disorders, though it is an area of active investigation. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some early evidence, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is low (rated 2/5).
