Bifidobacterium adolescentis has been investigated in the context of autoimmune disorders due to its role in modulating gut microbiota and immune responses. Scientific interest is based on the concept that dysbiosis (microbial imbalance) in the gut is associated with many autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Some in vitro and animal studies have shown that B. adolescentis may promote regulatory T cell (Treg) differentiation and produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), both of which can dampen inflammatory immune responses. For example, a 2019 review highlighted the association of decreased B. adolescentis abundance with active IBD and suggested a possible protective or modulatory role.

However, direct clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most studies are preclinical, observational, or focus on correlations rather than interventions. There are only a few small pilot studies or case reports exploring supplementation of B. adolescentis in patients with autoimmune conditions, and results are mixed or inconclusive. While the mechanistic rationale is strong, and some microbial therapies are being tested, robust, large-scale, placebo-controlled trials are lacking. Thus, while the use of B. adolescentis is scientifically plausible and supported by preliminary evidence, its clinical effectiveness for treating or supporting autoimmune disorders remains unproven.
