Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Beta-glucans are naturally occurring polysaccharides found in the cell walls of cereals, bacteria, and fungi. They have been studied for their immunomodulatory properties, which are of interest in the context of autoimmune disorders. Preclinical studies and some small clinical trials suggest that beta-glucans can modulate immune responses, primarily by activating macrophages and natural killer cells, and by influencing cytokine production. This immunomodulation is sometimes theorized to help "balance" immune system activity, potentially reducing inappropriate immune responses characteristic of autoimmune diseases.

However, the quality and quantity of evidence supporting the use of beta-glucans specifically for the treatment or management of autoimmune disorders in humans is limited. Most clinical studies have focused on beta-glucans for infection resistance, cancer adjunct therapy, or general immune support, rather than for specific autoimmune conditions. The few available studies involving autoimmune disease models are predominantly animal-based, with only preliminary or indirect findings in humans. As a result, authoritative bodies and clinical guidelines do not currently recommend beta-glucans for autoimmune diseases. In summary, while there is a scientific rationale and some early research, robust clinical validation is lacking, justifying a low (2/5) evidence rating.
