Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Melatonin is widely used to support sleep disturbances in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and this use is supported by a growing body of scientific evidence. Children and adults with ASD often experience sleep problems, such as difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings, and reduced total sleep time. These disturbances can exacerbate behavioral challenges and negatively impact quality of life for both individuals and their families.

Multiple randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have shown that melatonin supplementation can significantly improve sleep onset latency (the time it takes to fall asleep), increase total sleep duration, and reduce the number of nighttime awakenings in individuals with autism. For example, a 2011 meta-analysis published in "Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology" found that melatonin improved sleep parameters and had a favorable safety profile in children with ASD. More recent studies, including those using prolonged-release melatonin, have confirmed these benefits.

Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland that regulates circadian rhythms, including the sleep-wake cycle. Some individuals with ASD have been found to have abnormalities in melatonin production or secretion, which may underpin their increased prevalence of sleep problems.

While melatonin does not treat the core symptoms of autism, its use for managing sleep disturbances is well-validated by scientific research, and it is recommended in clinical guidelines for this purpose. However, dosing and long-term safety should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
