Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has been explored as a potential adjunctive treatment for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD), primarily due to its role as a cofactor in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, which are implicated in attention and behavior regulation. Some small studies and case reports have suggested a possible benefit of vitamin B6 supplementation in reducing ADHD symptoms, particularly in children with documented deficiencies or metabolic disorders affecting B6 utilization. For example, a 2006 study by Mousain-Bosc et al. found that a combination of magnesium and vitamin B6 improved hyperactivity and attention in a subgroup of children with ADHD, but the study was small and lacked rigorous controls. Other studies have failed to demonstrate significant effects, and systematic reviews conclude that there is insufficient evidence to support routine use of vitamin B6 for ADHD. Major guidelines do not recommend vitamin B6 as a standard treatment. Overall, while biochemical plausibility exists due to its role in neurotransmitter metabolism, robust scientific validation through large, well-controlled trials is lacking. Therefore, the current scientific evidence supporting vitamin B6 for ADD/ADHD is weak, and its use is not generally justified outside of correcting a diagnosed deficiency.
