Bacopa monnieri, commonly known as Brahmi, is a traditional Ayurvedic herb that has been used for centuries to enhance cognitive function and memory. In recent years, it has attracted scientific attention for its potential role in supporting Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD). Several small-scale, placebo-controlled studies and systematic reviews have examined Bacopa's effects on attention, cognitive performance, and hyperactivity, especially in children and adolescents.
A few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have reported moderate improvements in some aspects of attention, impulse control, and cognitive processing in children with ADHD when given standardized Bacopa extracts (typically 225-300mg/day) for periods ranging from 12 to 16 weeks. These studies, however, often have methodological limitations such as small sample sizes, short duration, and lack of active comparator arms. A 2014 systematic review concluded that while Bacopa may have a beneficial effect on some cognitive domains, the evidence for its use in ADHD is preliminary and not yet robust enough for clinical recommendations.
The proposed mechanisms of action include modulation of neurotransmitters (such as acetylcholine), antioxidant activity, and neuroprotection. Importantly, Bacopa is generally considered safe, with minor gastrointestinal side effects reported in some users.
In summary, while there is scientific interest and some early positive findings regarding Bacopa for ADD/ADHD, the quality and quantity of evidence are limited. Larger, well-designed trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for this indication.
