Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Taurine, arginine, and alpha-ketoglutarate are sometimes combined in supplements marketed as exercise or athletic aids. Taurine is an amino acid involved in cellular hydration, antioxidant defense, and calcium signaling in muscle tissue. Arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide, which may enhance blood flow and potentially improve exercise performance. Alpha-ketoglutarate is an intermediate in the Krebs cycle, involved in energy production and amino acid metabolism.

The scientific evidence for the combined use of these ingredients as exercise aids is limited and mixed. Some studies suggest that arginine supplementation can increase nitric oxide production and may improve exercise capacity in certain populations, but results in healthy athletes are inconsistent. Taurine supplementation has shown mild improvements in endurance and reduced muscle damage in some studies, but effects are modest. Alpha-ketoglutarate has been investigated for its role in reducing muscle fatigue and improving recovery, but robust, well-controlled human trials are lacking.

Overall, while each ingredient has some biological rationale and limited evidence supporting potential benefits for exercise performance, high-quality clinical evidence—especially for the combination of these ingredients—is lacking. Thus, the use of taurine arginine alpha-ketoglutarate as an exercise aid is scientifically plausible but not strongly validated.
