Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pyrroloquinoline quinone disodium salt (PQQ) has been investigated in recent years for its potential role as an athletic and exercise aid, primarily due to its antioxidant properties and effects on mitochondrial function. Several preclinical studies suggest that PQQ can stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis, reduce oxidative stress, and improve cellular energy metabolism. These mechanisms are relevant to exercise performance and recovery, as mitochondrial efficiency and oxidative balance are crucial for muscle endurance and repair.

However, direct evidence in humans relating PQQ supplementation to enhanced athletic performance or exercise recovery is limited. A small number of human clinical trials have shown that PQQ supplementation may reduce markers of inflammation and oxidative stress following exercise, and may support subjective feelings of reduced fatigue. For instance, one randomized controlled trial (Sawada et al., 2019) reported that PQQ supplementation reduced serum levels of C-reactive protein and subjective fatigue in healthy adults after exercise, but objective improvements in athletic performance were not clearly demonstrated.

Overall, while the biological plausibility supports a potential role for PQQ as an exercise aid, and preliminary clinical data is promising, robust and consistent evidence from large-scale human studies is lacking. Thus, the scientific support for PQQ as an athletic and exercise aid can be considered modest (rated 2/5), and further research is needed to confirm its efficacy and optimal use in this context.
