Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Potassium Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AKG) is sometimes included in athletic and exercise aids based on its role in the Krebs cycle, which is central to cellular energy production. The rationale is that supplementing with AKG could enhance energy metabolism, reduce muscle fatigue, and improve exercise performance. Some small human studies and animal research have suggested that AKG supplementation might influence muscle protein synthesis, reduce ammonia buildup (which can contribute to fatigue), and support recovery after intense exercise. However, the available scientific evidence is limited and somewhat inconsistent.

Most studies assessing AKG for athletic performance are either small, not well-controlled, or use AKG in combination with other compounds (such as L-arginine). For example, some research has shown that AKG, when combined with L-arginine, may improve strength and power output in resistance-trained individuals. However, it is difficult to isolate the effects of AKG alone from such studies. Other research has failed to detect significant benefits for endurance, strength, or recovery outcomes. Overall, the current body of evidence does not robustly support the use of Potassium AKG as a standalone ergogenic (performance-enhancing) supplement. More rigorous, large-scale clinical trials are needed to clarify its potential benefits for athletic and exercise performance.
