Ornithine ketoglutarate (OKG) is a salt formed from ornithine and alpha-ketoglutarate, both of which are intermediate metabolites involved in amino acid metabolism and the urea cycle. Its use as an athletic and exercise aid is supported by some scientific evidence, although this evidence is limited and not robust. OKG has been studied primarily for its potential to promote protein synthesis, reduce muscle catabolism, and support recovery, particularly in clinical settings such as trauma, burns, and surgery, rather than in healthy athletes. Some small studies and animal models have suggested that OKG supplementation can help reduce muscle breakdown and improve nitrogen balance, which theoretically could benefit athletes by enhancing recovery and muscle preservation. However, when it comes to direct effects on exercise performance, endurance, or muscle strength in healthy individuals, the data are sparse and inconsistent. A few trials in strength athletes have reported modest improvements in recovery markers, but larger, well-controlled studies are lacking. The proposed mechanisms include stimulation of growth hormone secretion, increased glutamine production, and improved ammonia detoxification, but these effects have not been conclusively demonstrated in the context of athletic performance. Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary data, the evidence remains limited and does not strongly support routine use of OKG as an exercise aid.
