Inositol-stabilized arginine silicate as an Athletic and Exercise Aid: Scientific Evidence

Inositol-stabilized arginine silicate (commonly sold as Nitrosigine) is primarily used in sports nutrition supplements aimed at enhancing athletic performance, particularly by supporting nitric oxide (NO) production and improving blood flow. Its mechanism is based on providing bioavailable arginine, a precursor to NO, which is thought to promote vasodilation and improve delivery of oxygen and nutrients to working muscles.

Several peer-reviewed clinical studies have investigated the efficacy of inositol-stabilized arginine silicate in exercise contexts. Notably, a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial by Kalman et al. (2015) demonstrated that supplementation increased plasma arginine and silicon levels, which correlated with increased NO production. Further studies showed improvements in some performance measures, such as muscle pump, perceived energy, and, in some cases, cognitive flexibility and reaction time in healthy adults after supplementation (Rector et al., 2017; Komorowski et al., 2019).

While the evidence points toward a beneficial effect on NO levels and some subjective performance outcomes, the overall body of research is still relatively limited compared to more established ergogenic aids like creatine or caffeine. Most studies are industry-sponsored and short-term, and there is a lack of large-scale, independent trials examining long-term safety and efficacy. Thus, while there is moderate scientific validation for its use as an exercise aid, the strength of evidence does not reach the highest levels.
