Its use as an aid for athletic performance is primarily rooted in tradition and historical practices. In the 20th century, Soviet researchers popularized Siberian ginseng among athletes and cosmonauts, claiming that it enhanced physical performance and reduced fatigue. Early clinical trials from Russia suggested some benefits for endurance and stress adaptation, but these studies often lacked rigorous design or proper controls.
Modern scientific evidence remains limited and inconsistent. Some small, short-term studies have evaluated Siberian ginseng’s impact on exercise performance, aerobic capacity, and recovery, but results are mixed and often not statistically significant. A few trials have noted minor improvements in work capacity or reduced subjective fatigue, but larger, well-controlled studies generally do not confirm these effects. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses conclude that there is insufficient high-quality evidence to firmly support Siberian ginseng’s efficacy as an athletic or exercise aid.
