Fadogia agrestis is a shrub native to Africa and is traditionally used in folk medicine as an aphrodisiac and to enhance male sexual performance. More recently, it has gained popularity in athletic and exercise circles, purportedly to support testosterone production and improve exercise performance. The scientific evidence supporting these claims, however, is extremely limited and of low quality. The primary studies available are animal-based, mostly conducted in rodents. For instance, some animal studies suggest that Fadogia agrestis extracts might increase serum testosterone levels and improve sexual behavior in male rats. This has led to speculation that it could enhance muscle mass, strength, or athletic performance in humans, but there is no direct evidence for these effects in humans. There are no well-designed human clinical trials evaluating the efficacy or safety of Fadogia agrestis for athletic or exercise-related outcomes. Additionally, concerns have been raised about potential toxicity at higher dosages based on animal studies. In summary, while there is some very preliminary animal evidence suggesting a possible effect on testosterone levels, there is currently insufficient scientific validation for its use as an athletic or exercise aid in humans. Caution is warranted until more rigorous human research is conducted.
