Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Capsiate is a non-pungent capsaicinoid found naturally in "CH-19 Sweet" peppers. It is structurally similar to capsaicin but does not cause the burning sensation. In the context of athletic and exercise aids, capsiate has been studied for its potential effects on metabolism and energy expenditure. Several small, short-term human studies indicate that oral supplementation with capsiate can modestly increase resting energy expenditure and fat oxidation, especially during low- to moderate-intensity exercise. For example, research published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2007) and Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry (2009) reported increased energy expenditure and fat oxidation in healthy adults after capsiate ingestion, without affecting heart rate or blood pressure.

Despite these promising effects, the magnitude of benefit appears modest and the duration of studies is generally short (often single-dose or a few weeks). The existing evidence does not robustly demonstrate improvements in athletic performance, endurance, or muscle strength. Most studies have focused on metabolic rate and fat oxidation rather than direct athletic outcomes. Moreover, sample sizes are small and there is a lack of long-term, large-scale trials. Thus, while there is some scientific evidence supporting capsiate's use as a metabolic aid, its efficacy as a core athletic or exercise performance enhancer remains limited. The evidence is rated 2 out of 5, as the effects are modest and not yet conclusively linked to improved athletic performance.
