Its use as an athletic and exercise aid is justified on scientific grounds, albeit with modest evidence compared to dairy-based proteins like whey or casein. Brown rice protein provides a complete amino acid profile, though it is somewhat lower in lysine than animal-derived proteins. Studies have shown that, when consumed in adequate amounts, brown rice protein can support muscle protein synthesis and post-exercise recovery similarly to whey protein.
For example, a 2013 randomized, double-blind study published in Nutrition Journal found no significant differences in recovery or muscle development between groups supplementing with rice protein isolate and whey protein isolate following resistance training. Brown rice protein is also hypoallergenic and suitable for individuals who are lactose intolerant or follow vegan diets, making it a practical alternative to animal-based proteins for athletic purposes.
However, the body of evidence specifically investigating brown rice protein in sports nutrition is still limited in size and scope, and most studies have compared it only to whey, rather than to a broader range of protein sources or placebo. Thus, while scientific validation exists for its effectiveness as an athletic aid, more large-scale and long-term studies are needed to strengthen the evidence base.
