Evidence supporting the use of: Bacillus subtilis
For the health condition: Athletic and Exercise Aids
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bacillus subtilis is a probiotic bacterium increasingly included in supplements marketed as Athletic and Exercise Aids. The scientific rationale is based on its potential to favorably modulate gut microbiota, support immune health, and possibly enhance nutrient absorption. Some animal studies suggest that B. subtilis supplementation can improve performance endurance and muscle recovery, possibly by reducing inflammation, supporting gut barrier integrity, and influencing metabolic pathways relevant to energy production. For example, a few rodent studies have demonstrated improved swimming endurance and reduced fatigue markers in animals supplemented with B. subtilis.
Human evidence, however, is limited. A handful of small-scale clinical trials and pilot studies have examined the effects of multi-strain probiotics (sometimes including B. subtilis) on athletic populations, noting potential improvements in gastrointestinal comfort, reduced risk of infections, and—occasionally—modest improvements in perceived exertion or recovery. However, isolating the specific effect of B. subtilis is challenging due to mixed formulations and study limitations. Currently, there is insufficient direct evidence to claim that B. subtilis alone enhances exercise performance or recovery in healthy adults. Thus, while there is a plausible scientific basis and preliminary data, the evidence remains early-stage, justifying a moderate-low rating of 2 out of 5.
In summary, B. subtilis is used in athletic supplements based on its probiotic properties and potential indirect benefits, but robust clinical validation for direct exercise performance enhancement is lacking.
