Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has a longstanding history in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, but its use as an athletic and exercise aid is now also supported by emerging scientific evidence. Several randomized controlled trials suggest that ashwagandha supplementation may enhance physical performance in both strength and endurance-based activities. Notable studies have demonstrated improvements in VO2 max, muscle strength, and recovery in athletes and recreationally active individuals. For example, a 2015 study in the "Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition" reported that participants who took ashwagandha root extract showed significantly greater increases in muscle strength and size compared to a placebo group over eight weeks of resistance training. Other research has found that ashwagandha can help reduce exercise-induced muscle damage, lower markers of exercise-related stress, and improve cardiorespiratory endurance. These effects are thought to be related to ashwagandha’s adaptogenic properties, antioxidant content, and ability to modulate cortisol levels. However, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are still limited, with relatively small sample sizes and varying dosages used across studies. Therefore, while current scientific evidence is promising and supports ashwagandha’s use as an exercise aid, more robust and larger-scale trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and establish standardized dosing protocols.
