Evidence supporting the use of: Arginine silicate
For the health condition: Athletic and Exercise Aids
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Arginine silicate is used as an ingredient in some athletic and exercise aids due to its potential to enhance nitric oxide (NO) production, leading to improved blood flow and possibly increased exercise performance. The evidence supporting its use comes from several small-scale, industry-funded trials. These studies suggest that arginine silicate (often in the form of arginine silicate inositol, or ASI) may increase plasma arginine and silicon levels, which are associated with enhanced vasodilation and nutrient delivery to muscles during exercise. Some research has shown modest improvements in measures such as muscle pump, perceived energy, and recovery in athletes and recreational exercisers. For example, a 2015 study in the "Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition" found that ASI supplementation led to improvements in bench press power and muscle recovery. However, the number of independent, high-quality, and long-term studies is limited, and the observed effects are generally modest. There is no substantial evidence that arginine silicate provides benefits beyond those seen with standard L-arginine supplementation, and its effect on actual athletic performance outcomes (such as endurance or strength over time) remains uncertain. Thus, while there is some preliminary scientific support, the overall strength and quality of evidence is low to moderate.
