Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 1

Arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (AAKG) is commonly marketed as a supplement to enhance athletic performance and exercise capacity. The rationale for its use is primarily based on the theoretical role of arginine as a precursor to nitric oxide (NO), which is believed to promote vasodilation, increase blood flow, and thereby potentially enhance nutrient delivery and exercise performance. Alpha-ketoglutarate is an intermediate in the Krebs cycle, thought to support energy production.

However, scientific validation for these claims is weak. Most studies on AAKG have failed to demonstrate significant improvements in strength, power, endurance, or body composition in healthy adults. A 2012 review by Campbell et al. and several randomized controlled trials have reported no significant ergogenic benefit from AAKG supplementation in resistance-trained or recreational athletes. Some small studies have shown minor increases in perceived pump or muscle endurance, but these effects are inconsistent and not robust.

At present, the consensus in the scientific literature is that there is insufficient evidence to support the use of AAKG as an effective exercise or athletic aid. The ingredient’s popularity is largely driven by theoretical mechanisms and marketing rather than solid empirical support. Therefore, the evidence rating supporting AAKG for athletic and exercise performance is low (1/5), indicating a lack of meaningful scientific validation.
