Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tyrosol is a naturally occurring phenolic compound found primarily in olive oil and other plant-based sources. Its use for supporting or treating arteriosclerosis (the thickening and hardening of the arterial walls) is based on emerging scientific research rather than traditional or historical medicinal use. Preclinical studies and some small-scale clinical trials suggest that tyrosol possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help protect vascular endothelial cells from oxidative stress and inflammation—two processes implicated in arteriosclerosis development. Research also indicates tyrosol may help reduce LDL oxidation and improve endothelial function, both of which are beneficial for cardiovascular health.

However, while these mechanisms are promising, direct evidence from large, controlled human trials linking tyrosol supplementation to significant prevention or treatment of arteriosclerosis is limited. Most current data derives from animal experiments, in vitro studies, or broader analyses of olive oil (which contains multiple bioactive compounds, including tyrosol and hydroxytyrosol). Therefore, while tyrosol is scientifically studied for cardiovascular benefits and may contribute to the positive effects seen with olive oil consumption, the evidence specifically supporting its use for arteriosclerosis is preliminary and rated as modest (2 out of 5).
