Evidence supporting the use of: San-Qi Ginseng
For the health condition: Arteriosclerosis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
San-Qi Ginseng, also known as Panax notoginseng, is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has been used for cardiovascular health, among other indications. In terms of its use for arteriosclerosis (the thickening and hardening of arterial walls), there is a growing body of scientific evidence supporting its potential benefits. Several in vivo and in vitro studies have indicated that Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS), the primary active ingredients, exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-platelet aggregation, and lipid-lowering effects. These properties are relevant to the pathogenesis of arteriosclerosis, which involves inflammation, oxidative stress, and lipid accumulation in arterial walls.
Research published in peer-reviewed journals has demonstrated that PNS can attenuate the development of atherosclerotic lesions in animal models by reducing oxidative stress and modulating the expression of adhesion molecules and inflammatory cytokines. Additionally, some studies have shown improvement in endothelial function and inhibition of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, both of which are important in slowing the progression of arteriosclerosis. However, while preclinical data are promising, large-scale, high-quality human clinical trials are still limited. Therefore, while there is a scientific basis for San-Qi Ginseng’s use in supporting cardiovascular health and potentially attenuating arteriosclerosis, the evidence is not yet definitive or sufficient for widespread clinical recommendation.
