Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) found in fish oil, have substantial scientific support for their role in supporting cardiovascular health and managing arteriosclerosis (the thickening and hardening of arterial walls). Multiple large-scale epidemiological studies have shown that populations with higher dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids have lower rates of cardiovascular disease, including conditions related to arteriosclerosis. The primary mechanisms by which omega-3s exert their beneficial effects include reducing blood triglyceride levels, lowering blood pressure, decreasing platelet aggregation (thereby reducing the risk of clot formation), and possessing anti-inflammatory properties that help prevent the progression of arterial plaque formation.

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have demonstrated that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids can slow the progression of atherosclerosis, a key component of arteriosclerosis. For example, the GISSI-Prevenzione trial and other similar studies have shown that omega-3 supplementation leads to a reduction in adverse cardiovascular events. The American Heart Association and European Society of Cardiology recognize the role of omega-3 fatty acids in cardiovascular risk reduction, though they note that benefit is most pronounced in patients with elevated triglycerides or established cardiovascular disease.

Overall, the evidence base supports the use of omega-3 fatty acids as a scientifically validated adjunct therapy for arteriosclerosis, especially when used as part of a comprehensive cardiovascular risk reduction strategy.
