Evidence supporting the use of: Flavan-3-ols
For the health condition: Arteriosclerosis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Flavan-3-ols, a subgroup of flavonoids found abundantly in foods such as cocoa, tea, apples, and berries, have been investigated for their potential cardiovascular benefits, including effects relevant to arteriosclerosis (the thickening and hardening of arterial walls). A growing body of scientific data supports their beneficial role in vascular health, primarily through improvements in endothelial function, reduction of blood pressure, and anti-inflammatory effects. Randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that regular consumption of flavan-3-ol-rich foods (especially cocoa and tea) can improve flow-mediated dilation (a measure of endothelial function) and modestly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. These effects are relevant to arteriosclerosis, as endothelial dysfunction and hypertension are key contributors to its development and progression.
However, while there is solid evidence for general cardiovascular benefit, the direct impact of flavan-3-ols on the progression or reversal of arteriosclerosis itself is less well-established. Most studies focus on surrogate endpoints (like blood pressure and endothelial function), rather than direct measures of arterial plaque or stiffness. Nonetheless, the consistent positive effects on vascular function suggest a plausible role in supporting the prevention or management of arteriosclerosis. Therefore, the evidence is rated as moderate (3/5) — flavan-3-ols are scientifically supported for cardiovascular health, but more direct research on arteriosclerosis is still needed.
