Vitamin E, particularly in the form of mixed tocopherols, has been investigated for its potential benefits in supporting arterial and cardiovascular health due to its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants like vitamin E can help reduce oxidative stress, a process implicated in the development of atherosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of the arteries). Historically, observational studies suggested that higher vitamin E intake might be associated with lower rates of cardiovascular disease. However, large, well-controlled clinical trials have yielded mixed or disappointing results. For example, the Heart Outcomes Prevention Evaluation (HOPE) and the Women’s Health Study found that vitamin E supplementation did not significantly reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, including those related to arterial health, in the general population. Some studies even suggested possible harm in certain groups, such as increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke with high-dose supplementation.
Overall, while the biological plausibility for vitamin E as a protector of arterial health exists, robust scientific evidence from clinical trials does not strongly support the benefit of vitamin E supplementation for the prevention or treatment of arterial disease in otherwise healthy adults. Most health authorities do not recommend vitamin E supplements specifically for arterial or cardiovascular support, except in cases of deficiency. Food sources of vitamin E, such as nuts and seeds, remain part of a heart-healthy diet, but additional supplementation for arterial health is not well supported by current scientific evidence.
