Vitamin E, including its form alpha-tocopheryl succinate, has been investigated for its potential benefits for the cardiovascular and arterial systems due to its antioxidant properties. The primary justification for its use is scientific, not traditional, as most historical uses of vitamin E were focused on general health rather than specifically arterial support.
Vitamin E acts as a lipid-soluble antioxidant, helping to protect cell membranes, including those in arterial walls, from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Oxidative modification of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is considered a key step in the development of atherosclerosis, a major contributor to arterial disease. Some observational studies have associated higher vitamin E intake with reduced risk of coronary artery disease. However, large randomized controlled trials (RCTs), such as the HOPE and ATBC studies, have not consistently shown that vitamin E supplementation reduces the incidence of cardiovascular events or progression of arterial disease in the general population.
Alpha-tocopheryl succinate, specifically, is a synthetic ester form of vitamin E used in supplements for its stability. While it is bioavailable, direct evidence differentiating it from other forms in terms of arterial support is limited. Overall, while mechanistic and some epidemiological data support a potential role for vitamin E in arterial health, the clinical evidence is mixed, and major health authorities do not recommend vitamin E supplementation solely for arterial or cardiovascular disease prevention.
