Evidence supporting the use of: Serrapeptase
For the body system: Arteries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme originally isolated from bacteria in the digestive tract of silkworms. It is marketed as a supplement with purported benefits for cardiovascular health, including supporting arterial health by reducing inflammation and helping to break down atherosclerotic plaques. Some preliminary scientific studies and small clinical trials suggest serrapeptase may reduce inflammation and promote the breakdown of fibrin and other protein-based byproducts involved in arterial plaque formation. However, the total body of evidence is limited, often of low quality, and many studies have methodological weaknesses such as small sample sizes, lack of controls, or short durations.
There are no large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials confirming that serrapeptase directly benefits arterial health or prevents/treats atherosclerosis in humans. Most of the available evidence comes from in vitro studies, animal models, or pilot clinical trials focusing on its anti-inflammatory and fibrinolytic properties. While the biological plausibility for cardiovascular benefit exists, robust clinical validation is lacking. Major medical organizations do not currently recommend serrapeptase for arterial or cardiovascular health due to insufficient evidence. In summary, while there is some scientific investigation into the use of serrapeptase for arterial support, the evidence remains weak, and its use is not widely accepted in mainstream medicine.
