Oleic acid is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid found abundantly in olive oil and some other plant sources. It has been studied extensively for its effects on cardiovascular health, particularly in the context of diets such as the Mediterranean diet, which is high in oleic acid. Numerous observational and interventional studies suggest that replacing saturated fats with monounsaturated fats like oleic acid can lead to improvements in lipid profiles, including reductions in total and LDL cholesterol, which are established risk factors for atherosclerosis and arterial disease.

Meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials have shown that diets rich in oleic acid may reduce markers of inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, both important for the health of the arteries. For example, replacing saturated fats with oleic acid has been associated with better flow-mediated dilation, a measure of arterial flexibility and health. However, while the evidence supports cardiovascular benefits, it is often difficult to separate the effects of oleic acid from those of other bioactive compounds present in olive oil and similar foods. Some benefits may be due to polyphenols or other components rather than oleic acid alone.
