Grape, particularly in the form of grape seed extract and red or purple grape skins, is supported by scientific evidence for its benefits to the arterial and cardiovascular system. The primary active compounds are polyphenols, especially flavonoids like resveratrol, and proanthocyanidins, which have been shown to exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that grape-derived polyphenols can improve endothelial function, reduce blood pressure modestly, and decrease oxidative stress, all of which are important for arterial health. For example, a meta-analysis published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" (2011) found that grape polyphenol supplementation led to significant improvements in flow-mediated dilation, a marker of endothelial function.
However, while the evidence is promising, most studies use concentrated extracts and the effects seen are generally modest. The strength of evidence is graded as moderate (3 out of 5), as there are well-conducted human trials but not yet widespread consensus or large-scale, long-term outcome studies. Historically, grapes have been used in Mediterranean diets associated with cardiovascular health, but the modern scientific focus is primarily on isolated components. Overall, grape-derived polyphenols appear to support arterial health based on current scientific understanding.
