Ginseng, particularly Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Korean medicine. In these systems, ginseng is often regarded as a general tonic for enhancing vitality, energy, and longevity, which may include indirect support for cardiovascular health and, by extension, arterial health. However, the historical use of ginseng specifically for supporting the arteries is not as clearly defined as its use for general “qi” strengthening or fatigue reduction.
Scientific studies have investigated ginseng’s effects on cardiovascular health, including blood pressure modulation, endothelial function, and lipid profiles. Some research suggests potential benefits, such as mild vasodilation, antioxidant effects, and improvement of endothelial function, which could theoretically support arterial health. However, the evidence is mixed and often preliminary, with variability in ginseng species, preparations, and doses studied. Most clinical trials are small, and findings are not always consistent. As such, while there is some traditional basis and emerging scientific interest, strong clinical evidence specifically supporting ginseng for arterial health is lacking.
