Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) is a family of growth factors involved in angiogenesis, wound healing, and embryonic development. Scientific evidence suggests that certain members of the FGF family, particularly FGF2 (basic FGF), play a significant role in supporting the arterial system by promoting the proliferation, differentiation, and migration of endothelial cells, which are crucial for blood vessel formation and repair. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that FGF2 can stimulate angiogenesis and aid in the recovery of ischemic tissues by enhancing arterial growth and collateral circulation. Additionally, FGF signaling is involved in the maintenance of vascular integrity and function.

However, while animal models and in vitro studies provide promising data, clinical applications of exogenous FGF in vascular or arterial diseases are still largely experimental. Human trials are limited, and issues such as dosage, delivery methods, and potential side effects are yet to be fully addressed. Some therapeutic strategies using FGF or FGF-mimicking agents are being explored for peripheral artery disease and coronary artery disease, but these approaches are not yet standard practice.

In summary, there is a scientific basis for the use of FGF to support the arteries based on its biological activity and preclinical evidence. Nonetheless, more robust clinical evidence is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in human arterial health.
