Erigeron breviscapus is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has been the subject of substantial scientific research, particularly for its effects on the cardiovascular system, including arteries. The primary active component, scutellarin, has been shown in preclinical and clinical studies to possess vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory, and antithrombotic properties. It is widely used in China to treat cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases such as ischemic stroke and atherosclerosis.
Mechanistically, scutellarin improves endothelial function by increasing nitric oxide production and reducing oxidative stress, thus supporting arterial health. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses (mostly published in Chinese journals) report that extracts of Erigeron breviscapus can improve cerebral blood flow, reduce blood viscosity, and inhibit platelet aggregation, which collectively benefit arterial function and reduce the risk of arterial blockages.
While most evidence comes from studies in China, and some methodological limitations exist, the overall body of scientific literature provides moderate to strong support for the use of Erigeron breviscapus in supporting the arteries, particularly in the context of cerebrovascular conditions. However, it is not widely recognized or approved for this use outside of Chinese medicine practice, and further high-quality, large-scale clinical trials would be beneficial to confirm its efficacy and safety in broader populations.
