Elastin is a key structural protein found in connective tissues, especially within the walls of large arteries such as the aorta. Its function is to provide elasticity and resilience, allowing blood vessels to stretch and recoil with each heartbeat. Scientific studies have demonstrated that elastin is crucial for maintaining arterial integrity and function. Deficiencies or abnormalities in elastin can result in arterial stiffness, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and atherosclerosis. Experimental models and human genetic disorders (e.g., Williams syndrome, which involves elastin gene deletions) further illustrate elastin’s central role in vascular health. However, while elastin is essential for arterial function, there is limited evidence that oral elastin supplements or elastin from external sources can directly support or restore the arterial system in humans. Most current therapies target the preservation of existing elastin rather than its supplementation. Therefore, the scientific basis for using elastin to support arteries is strong in terms of biological function, but weak in terms of direct supplementation efficacy.
