Evidence supporting the use of: Capsicum
For the body system: Arteries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Capsicum, commonly known as chili pepper, has been traditionally and scientifically explored for its effects on cardiovascular health, particularly due to its active component capsaicin. Scientific studies have investigated capsaicin's influence on vascular function and arterial health. Some animal and human studies suggest that capsaicin may promote vasodilation by stimulating the release of nitric oxide, leading to improved blood flow and potentially lowering blood pressure. Additionally, capsaicin has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties, which could theoretically support arterial health by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in vascular tissues.
However, while these mechanisms have been identified in experimental settings, robust clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most available studies are small, short-term, or conducted in animals. There are a few human trials indicating mild improvements in blood pressure and endothelial function with capsaicin supplementation, but large-scale, long-term studies confirming a significant benefit to arterial health are lacking. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence suggesting that capsicum and its extracts may support the arteries, the strength of evidence in humans is modest. The use of capsicum for arterial support is better justified by emerging scientific studies than by tradition, but more research is required for definitive conclusions.
