Scientific research over the past decade has shown that bergamot extract can help lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, while raising HDL cholesterol. Several clinical trials and observational studies have demonstrated its efficacy in improving lipid profiles in patients with hyperlipidemia, a known risk factor for atherosclerosis and arterial disease.

The mechanisms attributed to bergamot’s effects include inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase (the same enzyme targeted by statin drugs), antioxidant activity that reduces oxidative stress on artery walls, and anti-inflammatory properties. A 2013 study published in “Fitoterapia” and subsequent research have reported improvements in endothelial function—an important factor in arterial health—after supplementation with bergamot-derived polyphenols.
