Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Potassium aspartate-citrate is used in some clinical contexts to help support or treat arrhythmia, primarily due to the essential role of potassium in cardiac electrophysiology. Potassium is critical for maintaining normal cardiac action potentials and rhythm; hypokalemia (low potassium) is a known risk factor for various arrhythmias. Several guidelines recommend potassium supplementation in cases of hypokalemic arrhythmias. Potassium aspartate and potassium citrate are both bioavailable forms of potassium salts, and some studies (mostly from the 1970s–1990s, particularly in Europe) investigated their use for arrhythmia prevention, especially in conjunction with magnesium. For instance, a few controlled trials and observational studies reported reduced frequency of ventricular ectopic beats and improved cardiac function with oral potassium-magnesium aspartate supplementation. However, high-quality, large-scale randomized controlled trials specifically on potassium aspartate-citrate for arrhythmia are limited, and most evidence is extrapolated from studies on potassium supplementation in general. Major cardiology guidelines recommend correcting hypokalemia in arrhythmic patients, but do not specify aspartate-citrate as the preferred salt. In summary, while the physiological rationale is strong and some clinical evidence exists, the level of direct scientific support for potassium aspartate-citrate specifically is moderate rather than robust.
