Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Shen-chu (also known as Shenqu or Massa Fermentata) is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for digestive complaints, including issues related to appetite. The use of Shen-chu to support or treat excessive appetite is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation. In TCM theory, Shen-chu is believed to "harmonize the stomach," "promote digestion," and "reduce food stagnation," which can impact appetite regulation. Formulas containing Shen-chu are often used for symptoms such as overeating, bloating, indigestion, or food retention, which may be associated with excessive appetite.

There is limited scientific research specifically addressing Shen-chu’s effect on appetite, and most available studies focus on its general digestive benefits or its ability to support enzyme activity. Some animal studies suggest that fermented herbal ingredients may influence gut microbiota and metabolism, but direct evidence for Shen-chu reducing or managing excessive appetite in humans is lacking. Therefore, the evidence rating is 2: while traditional use is longstanding and some plausible mechanisms exist, rigorous scientific validation is insufficient. Use of Shen-chu for excessive appetite should be considered within the context of traditional practice and not as a substitute for medical advice or evidence-based interventions.
