Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) and its aril, mace, have been used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani for various digestive complaints, including poor appetite (appetite deficiency). In these traditions, nutmeg and mace are believed to possess 'carminative' and 'stomachic' properties, which are thought to stimulate appetite and aid digestion. Classical Ayurvedic texts mention nutmeg (known as "jaiphal") as an agent to treat loss of appetite and indigestion, often as a component of polyherbal formulations.

However, direct scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of nutmeg or mace in treating deficient appetite is limited. The few modern studies available focus primarily on their antimicrobial, antioxidant, or CNS effects, rather than on appetite stimulation. While some animal studies suggest that certain spices may stimulate gastric secretions and motility, specific research on nutmeg or mace’s effect on appetite is lacking. Therefore, the use of nutmeg and mace for improving appetite is best categorized as traditional, with moderate historical but little to no direct scientific validation.
