Ginseng, particularly Panax ginseng, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other Asian medical systems as a general tonic, including for conditions associated with deficient appetite. In TCM, ginseng is believed to tonify "Qi" (vital energy), and loss of appetite is often attributed to deficiencies in this vital force or to digestive weakness. Classical texts, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing," mention ginseng as a remedy to strengthen the spleen and stomach, organs traditionally associated with appetite and digestion. Several traditional formulas containing ginseng, such as "Shen Ling Bai Zhu San," are prescribed specifically for poor appetite, fatigue, and digestive weakness.

However, scientific evidence directly supporting ginseng's efficacy in improving appetite is limited. Some preclinical studies suggest that ginseng extracts may have a mild stimulatory effect on gastric motility or could modulate neuropeptides involved in hunger, but robust clinical trials are lacking. Therefore, the use of ginseng for appetite deficiency is primarily justified by traditional practice, and the strength of evidence is moderate within that context but weak by modern scientific standards.
