Cactus species, particularly Opuntia (prickly pear) and Nopalea, have a history of traditional use in various cultures, especially in Mexico and parts of Latin America, as food and folk remedies. Traditional medicinal texts and ethnobotanical surveys often mention cactus pads and fruits for digestive health and as a general tonic, sometimes including use for stimulating appetite in those who are ill or recovering. However, the specific use of cactus for treating deficient appetite (anorexia or loss of appetite) is less well documented than other uses such as for diabetes, inflammation, or hangover. There is little direct scientific research validating cactus as an appetite stimulant; most studies focus on its effects on blood sugar, cholesterol, or as a source of dietary fiber and antioxidants. Anecdotal and traditional reports suggest cactus can support digestive function and thereby potentially improve appetite, but high-quality clinical trials are lacking.
