Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has been investigated for its potential role in supporting or treating anxiety disorders, primarily due to its function as a cofactor in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), all of which are implicated in mood regulation and anxiety. A few small clinical studies and observational reports suggest that individuals with low levels of vitamin B6 may be at a higher risk for symptoms of anxiety and depression. For example, a 2022 randomized controlled trial published in "Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental" found that high-dose vitamin B6 supplementation reduced self-reported anxiety in young adults compared to placebo, although the effect size was modest and the sample size relatively small.

Despite these findings, the overall scientific evidence is limited and not robust. Most studies have methodological limitations, such as small sample sizes, short duration, or lack of replication. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses have concluded that while vitamin B6 may play a supporting role as part of a broader nutritional and psychological strategy, there is insufficient high-quality evidence to recommend it as a standalone treatment for anxiety disorders. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary clinical evidence for its use, vitamin B6 should not be considered a primary therapy for anxiety, and further research is needed to clarify its efficacy and optimal dosing.
