Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rhodiola sacra is traditionally used in Tibetan and Chinese medicine, often for its adaptogenic properties, which are believed to help the body resist physical, chemical, and biological stress. In these traditional systems, Rhodiola species—including Rhodiola sacra—have been employed to improve mood, reduce fatigue, and promote mental clarity. There are anecdotal reports and historical uses suggesting benefits for anxiety and stress-related symptoms. However, the majority of modern research has focused on Rhodiola rosea, a closely related species, rather than Rhodiola sacra specifically.

There is limited direct scientific evidence evaluating the efficacy of Rhodiola sacra for anxiety disorders in humans. Most available studies on Rhodiola for anxiety use Rhodiola rosea, which has shown some promise in small-scale clinical trials and animal studies for reducing symptoms of anxiety and stress. These studies suggest that Rhodiola extracts may modulate neurotransmitter levels and reduce stress-induced behavioral changes. Nonetheless, due to the lack of robust clinical trials on Rhodiola sacra itself, its use for anxiety is primarily supported by traditional practices rather than scientific validation. The evidence rating reflects this gap, indicating that while there is a basis in traditional medicine, strong clinical evidence is lacking.
