Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ginkgo flavonglycosides, the active compounds in Ginkgo biloba extracts, have a long history of traditional use in Chinese medicine for various cognitive and circulatory conditions, including symptoms related to anxiety and stress. However, scientific evidence specifically supporting their use in treating anxiety disorders is limited and inconclusive. Some small-scale clinical studies and animal models suggest that Ginkgo biloba may exert anxiolytic effects, potentially through modulation of neurotransmitter systems and antioxidant properties. Nevertheless, the overall body of evidence is weak, with many studies showing mixed or non-significant results, and systematic reviews conclude that there is insufficient high-quality data to recommend Ginkgo for anxiety disorders. Most of the use of Ginkgo for anxiety is driven by traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation. Current guidelines for the treatment of anxiety disorders do not include Ginkgo flavonglycosides as a recommended therapy, and more rigorous clinical trials are needed to clarify its efficacy and safety for this indication.
