English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Use for Anxiety Disorders: Scientific Evidence
English Lavender has a long history of traditional use for calming and relaxation, but its use for anxiety disorders is increasingly supported by scientific research. Several clinical studies and systematic reviews have investigated the anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) properties of lavender, particularly in the form of oral supplements (such as Silexan, a standardized lavender oil preparation) and aromatherapy.
Randomized controlled trials have shown that oral lavender oil can significantly reduce symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and subsyndromal anxiety when compared to placebo, with effects comparable to low-dose benzodiazepines in some studies. The mechanism is thought to involve modulation of neurotransmitter activity, including effects on the serotonin system and voltage-dependent calcium channels. Aromatherapy with lavender essential oil has also been found to have mild calming effects in smaller studies, although these tend to show more modest or short-term benefits.
Meta-analyses and systematic reviews generally conclude that there is moderate quality evidence supporting the short-term use of lavender oil for mild to moderate anxiety. However, more large-scale, long-term studies are needed to fully establish its efficacy and safety profile. Adverse effects are rare but can include gastrointestinal upset or allergic reactions. Overall, the evidence base justifies a moderate rating (3/5) for lavender's use in anxiety disorders, reflecting both promising clinical results and some remaining uncertainties.
