Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

There is growing scientific interest in the gut-brain axis and the role of gut microbiota, including Bifidobacterium species, in mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders. Some preclinical studies in rodents have demonstrated that supplementation with certain Bifidobacterium strains can reduce anxiety-like behavior, possibly by modulating neurotransmitter systems, immune signaling, and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In humans, a small number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have investigated the effects of mixed Bifidobacterium probiotics on anxiety symptoms. For example, a 2019 systematic review (Nikolova et al., 2019, Front Psychiatry) found modest but inconsistent evidence that multi-strain probiotics containing Bifidobacterium may reduce anxiety scores in some populations. However, results are mixed, and many studies suffer from limitations such as small sample sizes, short duration, and varying probiotic formulations. The evidence is not strong enough to recommend Bifidobacterium probiotics as a primary treatment for anxiety disorders, but there is preliminary scientific rationale and some limited clinical evidence supporting their potential adjunctive benefit. No strong traditional use exists for this indication. Further high-quality clinical trials are needed to clarify efficacy and mechanisms.
