Bifidobacterium adolescentis is a probiotic bacterium that has been studied for its potential effects on mental health, including anxiety disorders. The rationale for its use is based on the concept of the gut-brain axis, which recognizes a bidirectional relationship between the gut microbiota and the central nervous system. Several animal studies have demonstrated that administration of B. adolescentis can influence behavior and neurochemistry associated with anxiety. For example, a 2015 study published in "Brain, Behavior, and Immunity" found that B. adolescentis supplementation altered gut microbiota composition and reduced anxiety-like behaviors in mice subjected to stress. Furthermore, some human studies investigating multi-strain probiotics containing B. adolescentis have reported improvements in mood and reductions in anxiety symptoms, but isolating the specific contribution of B. adolescentis remains challenging due to the use of mixed formulations. Despite these promising findings, robust clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most human trials are preliminary, have small sample sizes, or do not focus exclusively on B. adolescentis. No large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials have established its efficacy for clinical anxiety disorders. As such, while there is a scientific basis for exploring its use and some early supportive data, the overall strength of evidence is currently low to moderate. Further research is needed to determine the specific efficacy and mechanisms of B. adolescentis in anxiety disorders.
