Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin B6 (Mixed)
For the health condition: Anxiety
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has some scientific evidence supporting its potential role in alleviating symptoms of anxiety, though the evidence is not robust and more high-quality studies are needed. B6 is a cofactor in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), all of which are involved in mood regulation. A few small studies and observational reports have found that individuals with anxiety may have lower levels of B6, and supplementation has been associated with reductions in self-reported anxiety symptoms. For example, a 2022 randomized controlled trial found that high-dose vitamin B6 supplementation reduced self-reported anxiety and stress in young adults compared to placebo. However, the effect sizes were modest, and the study had some limitations, such as small sample size and reliance on self-reported outcomes.
Overall, while there is a plausible biological mechanism and some limited clinical evidence, the use of vitamin B6 for anxiety is not yet fully validated by large, high-quality trials. Most clinical guidelines do not recommend B6 as a first-line treatment for anxiety disorders. It is sometimes used as an adjunct in cases where deficiency is suspected, but it should not replace evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or pharmacological interventions.
