Evidence supporting the use of: Lupulinum
For the health condition: Anxiety
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lupulinum, the glandular powder derived from the dried strobiles (female flowers) of the hop plant (Humulus lupulus), has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly as a mild sedative and for the relief of anxiety and sleep disturbances. The use of hops, and by extension lupulinum, for nervousness and restlessness is documented in various European medical texts from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The traditional rationale is based on observations that hops have calming effects, which led to their inclusion in herbal teas and sleep pillows designed to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.
Scientific evidence supporting lupulinum specifically for anxiety is limited. Some studies on hop extracts (which contain lupulin as one component) suggest mild sedative and anxiolytic effects, likely mediated through modulation of GABAergic activity in the central nervous system. However, these studies are generally small, use whole hop preparations or specific compounds (like 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol), and do not isolate lupulinum as the active agent. There is a lack of high-quality, large-scale clinical trials evaluating lupulinum for anxiety. Thus, while the traditional use is well established, scientific validation remains modest, and the evidence for efficacy is considered low to moderate.
